Austin DBT Groups

MY PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of DBT is to build a life worth living. By learning new coping skills to manage emotions and decreasing tendencies to engage in self-destructive behaviors, you can begin the process of finding meaning and direction in life. Clients often report that these new skills also enhance the quality of their relationships. The purpose of the skills group is to be in an environment with other committed members who are also dedicated to practicing new coping skills to improve the quality of their life. The encouragement, momentum, and energy gained from the group environment can assist members in making positive changes.
BEGINNING DBT THERAPY
The process of getting started in a DBT group is simple. Contact me for an initial assessment (which lasts 45 minutes). In this individual appointment, we go over your goals, background and history, and present stressors that you are struggling with. I provide some orientation to DBT, the group, and assist you individualizing a DBT Diary Card so that you are ready to start group. The advantage of having four different skills groups that I am offering is that I am able to place group members in groups with others who are at a similar life stage and/or perhaps working through similar issues. This often provides group members with greater ease in sharing and momentum in working through issues, as they are with others whom they can relate to and give them encouragement. By the end of the assessment, we will have identified which group you would be the best fit for and you will have a start date for the group.
